Hugh Watt Knox was born 5th September 1898 to Rev. Hugh Montgomery Knox and Isabella Witherow. The family lived in the Graniamore Presbytery near Ballymote in Co Sligo, where Rev Hugh was the Presbyterian minister. Isabella Witherow’s father, Dr Thomas Witherow, was also a Presbyterian minister and was the first professor of church history and first librarian at Magee College, Londonderry. Hugh Watt Knox was the fourth of the seven children and probably attended Sligo Grammar school as his younger siblings did. His eldest brother, William Herbert Knox, joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1914, served in France and was awarded the Military Cross. His next brother, Thomas Witherow Knox, enlisted in the Royal Irish Rifles in October 1916. Hugh Watt Knox joined the R.A.F. in July 1918 and on the 10th October was probably on his way to deployment after training in Ireland. He survived the torpedoing of the R.M.S. Leinster but spent many months in hospital with influenza following his hours in the sea. He wastransferred to the R.A.F. Reserve in February 1919. In September 1923 he married Stella Elizabeth Letitia Steele and they had a son Brian. At that time he was working as a Cashier in the Ulster Bank in York St. Belfast. He was later Manager in the Ann St. /Cornmarket branch in Belfast. He retired to Bangor about 1960 and died there in April 1967.
